10.12.2006 käisime Helsingis Soome Võitjal. Berne oli 98. Tõu parimaks tuli Odenhills Frodo ja vastassugupoole parimaks Thalys v.d. Buut Vrij Hoeve. Juunioridest võitsid Doremis Wonder Waldemar Brad ja Fonacot´s Happy Halliwell (väga kena koer, loodetavasti väga eduka näitusetulevikuga). Õnne tublidele ja ilusatele! :) Mis aga meisse puutub, siis kahjuks suutsin seal Portokale tõsise käki kokku keerata. Kuna enamus soomlasi näitab berni peenikese keti ja nahkrihmaga, siis ostsin näitusehallist meilegi täispoova keti ja panin kohe sealsamas vahetult enne ringi koerale kaela. Tavaliselt ta ei karda midagi ega kedagi, seega ma ei tulnud selle pealegi, et kett võiks teda ehmatada. Ta ei ole kunagi varem mitte mingisuguse ketiga kokku puutunud ja see nähtavasti krõbises ja kilksus ta kaela ümber hoopis teistmoodi kui nahkrihm või nöörrihm, mida varem kasutanud oleme. Koer hakkas ketti käppadega kraapima ja üritas seda tagurdades üle pea saada. Kui seepeale kett pingesse läks (ja mina tõredaks) siis heitis koer lihtsalt pikali maha, peaaegu et kattis käppadega silmad kinni ja ei liikunud millimeetritki. Niisuguse hingelise trauma suutsin koerale enne ringi tekitada! Normaalne :(

Kui ma oma pikkadele juhtmetele vaatamata lõpuks aru sain, et nii lihtsalt see ketivärk ei käi, siis oli juba totaalselt hilja ja koer ei usaldanud mind enam. Ringi läksime küll nahkrihmaga, aga Porthos üritas ennast elu hinnaga minust eemale hoida. Nähtavasti arvas, et kõige õigem oleks joosta nii, et mina olen ühes messikeskuse otsas ja tema igaks juhuks teises. Jooksis kuidagi poolkülitsi, pea eemale keeratud, kramplikult sirgete jalgadega - lintadi-löntadi nagu puujalgadega kaelkirjak - ei mingit vetruvust ega hoogu. Püüdsin küll tempot vahetada ja erinevat kiirust katsetada, et ehk meelitab koerast õige sammu välja, aga nii lühikese maa pea loli see lootusetu üritus, ikka nagu kargud poisil  all. Meid päästis ainult see, et kui seisma pidi, siis ta seisis nagu eeskujuliku näitusekoera elav musternäidis - koer võttis iseseisvalt suurepärase poosi ja püsis ilusti paigal. Kui hambaid vaadati, siis peaaegu et tõstis ise oma mokad üles - nii püüdlik oli. Aga ta ei julgenud või ei tahtnud mulle silma vaadata, kõrvad olid ludus ja olek selline, nagu ma oleks mingi hirmuäratav sado-maso terminaatormutt, keda ta näeb esimest korda elus. Tulemuseks "väga hea".

Pärast ringi läksime korra õue jalutama, ajasin koeraga juttu, tegin natuke naljagi, eesmärgiga oma parima sõbraga uuesti sõbraks saada. Ei kulunud palju aega, kui ta parkla kõrval muruplatsil juba täiesti normaalses meeleolus ilusti kõrval jooksis. Aga siis oli juba hilja ja polnud oma tublit ja toredat (ja hästi liikuvat!) koera enam kellelegi näidata... Nii et suurel näitusel käidud, "kooliraha makstud" - annaks jumal, et ma sellest kogemusest õppust võtaks ja ei teeks enam tulevikus koerale karuteeneid.

Näitus ise meeldis mulle väga. Ruumi oli palju, koerad tublid, kohvikuid, tualette igal pool, palju põnevaid kaupu müügil. Koerakaupade hinnad olid enamasti odavamad kui Eestis. Koertele oli pissimise jaoks igale poole väikesed põhupakid maha pandud - tohutult hea mõte, kuna nad nagu magnetiga tõmbusidki just nende põhupakkide juurde ja seinad ja postid jäid suhteliselt puhtaks. Ümber maja askeldas pidevalt koristajameeste brigaad. Käisin ka koerte suuhoolduse loengus, aga kuna ma päris täpselt kogu soomekeelsest jutust aru ei saanud, siis ei olnud lõpuni, mis ma seal ikka arusaajat nägu teesklen - parem käin mööda messihalli ringi ja uudistan ning ostan asju. :)

10.12.2006 we went to Helsinki, to Finnish Winner. There were 98 berners. BOB was Odenhills Frodo and BOS was Thalys v.d. Buut Vrij Hoeve. Junior winners were Doremis Wonder Waldemar Brad and Fonacot´s Happy Halliwell (a very nice young bitch, hopefully with a glorious show-future). Congratulations to the best! :) As regards us, I managed to undermine our chance. Many people (especially in Finland) show berners with a thin chain. I decided to follow their example and bought a nice shiny choke chain from the show hall and placed it around the dog's neck right before going into the ring. He has no experience with any kind of chains so far, and obviously it clicked and felt differently than leather or rope collar, that we have used before. Usually he is not afraid of anything or anybody, so it didn't occur to me at all that he might be frightened by a simple chain. He started to fight against it and moved backwards, to get rid of this thing. As a result, the chain was choking and I was grumpy - a very bad combination... He just laid down, almost covered his eyes with his paws and din't move anywhere anymore. So I managed to cause such a mental trauma for him right before the ring, shame on me! 

When I finally realized that things are not so easy with the chain, it was too late and the dog didn't trust me any more. I replaced the chain with our usual leather leash to go to the ring, but Porthos tried to keep his distance from me as eagerly as he could. He seemed to think that it would be best if I ran in one side of the show hall and he - just in case - in the opposite. He moved in a quite weird way, head turned away from me to one side, with legs convulsively straight - like a giraffe with wooden legs - no elasticity, no bounce, no sweep. I tried to change the speed and pace in order to coax his normal gait, but no luck, it was a useless try. We were saved only by the fact that when it came to standing, he stood still like a perfect example of a superb show dog, took a fine stance all on his own, and when the judge took a look at his teeth, he practically lifted up his lips himself - he was so diligent. But he didin't want to make any eye contact with me, his ears were pinned back and he acted like I was a horrible sado-maso terminator-crone, whom he saw for the first time in his life. Result - "very good".

After our ring we went outside for a little walk. I talked to him and tried to elevate his spirit. I wanted to become friends again with my best buddy! It probably didn't take more than five minutes, when he was already running perfectly alongside with me, looking into my eyes and acting like nothing particular has ever happened. However, it was too late and I couldn't show my nice (and well moving!) young berner to anyone any more... So this was my first experience of taking part in the bigger show. Hopefully I learned from the mistake and will not make any left-handed favours to my friend ever again.

As to the show itself, everything was lovely. Enough space, enough cafes, well behaving dogs, interesting lectures, lots of good dog-stuff on sale. By the way, the stuff was mostly cheaper than it is here in Estonia. There were little straw-packages everywhere around the building for the dogs to pee on - it was a good idea, as the walls and posts stayed relatively clean this way. I visited the lecture in oral hygiene of dogs but since it was in Finnish, I didn't understand everything and decided to leave rather soon. It was much more interesting to walk around, see the dogs and their work in the rings, plus enjoy some shopping :)

05 november 2006 Tartu CACIB - kohtunik Boo Lundström Rootsist. Porthos oli tõu parim juunior ja PI/4. Juunioride Bestile me ei jäänud. Tõu parim (sert + CACIB) oli ilus emane koer Soomest, Maroussia Aiko-Avelina. Õnnitlused tema omanikule, pr. Jaana Lauhaluoma'le :). Vastassugupoole parim (sert + CACIB) oli RUS & BLR CH Alpin King Venemaalt.

21 oktoobril 2006 sai Porthos Rakvere näituselt viimase vajaliku juuniorserdi ja on nüüdsest Eesti, Läti, Leedu ja Baltikumi juuniortšempion :). Läti kohtunik pr. Ligita Zake valis Porthose VSP-juunioriks. TPJ oli soome bernitüdruk Zweierteam Jakaranda, kellega Porthos oli ka mais toimunud tõu erinäitusel parima juuniori valikul konkureerimas. Parima isase valikul saavutasime jälle teise koha, tšempionklassi võitja, INT & S & N & FIN & EST & RUS & LV & LTU CH ESTW-04 BALTW-04 LTW-05 Stenhöjdens Calippo järel, kellest sai ka tõu parim ja rühma neljas.

Mulle väga meeldis, et parima isase valiku ringis tuli kohtunik peale kohtade jagamist meie juurde, kiitis koera ja andis sealsamas ringis mulle nõu, kuidas koera karva kammida ja teda paremini näidata, et tugevad küljed paremini esile tuleks. Kohtunik rääkis, et Porthos liikus ringis kõige paremini, aga esikoha saanud koera näitamine oli parem. Arvestades seda, et mu elu esimene koertenäitus oli vähem kui viis kuud tagasi, on meil niigi ülihästi läinud ja kui pr. Zake taolisi põhjalikke kohtunikke oleks rohkem, kes vigu nähes mitte ainult ei kritiseeri, vaid pakuvad omalt poolt ka parema lahenduse välja, võiksime varsti juba päris kindla sammuga ka suurtel RV näitustel ringi minna. Uusi teadmisi on alati hea saada :)

On 21 October 2006, at Rakvere national dog show, Porthos was awarded the final junCAC to complete the Estonian, Latvian, Lithuanian, and Baltic junior champion titles :). A latvian judge, mrs. Ligita Zake chose Porthos junBOS. JunBOB was a finnish berner-girl Zweierteam Jakaranda, who was competing with Porthos for the junBOB title at the Tallinn Specialty show in May as well. At the best dog competition, Porthos was again second, after the champion class winner INT & S & N & FIN & EST & RUS & LV & LTU CH ESTW-04 BALTW-04 LTW-05 Stenhöjdens Calippo, who was later chosen BOB and BOG-4.

I liked it very much that in the best dog copetition, after assigning the places, the judge came straight to us, praised Porthos and gave me good advice, how to comb the dog and how to show him better, to underline and emphasize his strenghts. The judge said that Porthos was moving very well but the dog, which got the first place, was much better handled. Considering the fact that my first dog show ever was less than five months ago, I think that we have done extremely well anyway. If only there were more judges like mrs. Zake, who do not only critisize but also offer better solutions on how to improve things, we could soon be stepping calmly into the ring at bigger international shows too. I'm always happy to get new knowledges :)

14 oktoober 2006 oli jälle super päev - läti kohtunik pr. Inese Pablaka andis Porthosele Cesises hindeks suurepärane/1, juuniorserdi ja eriauhinna! Kohtunik polnud kiitusega kitsi, kiitis hambaid, kiitis karva, kiitis pead, kiitis iseloomu. Ringikorraldajalt sain üllatusega teada, et Lätis ei valitagi üldse eraldi tõu parimat juuniorit - valitakse ainult kõigi klassivõitjate hulgast sugupoole parim, kes hiljem läheb tõu parima selgitamiseks teise sugupoole parimaga võistlema. Parima isase valikul saavutasime teise koha tšempionklassi võitja, soome koera, FIN JW-03 FIN W-04 EST W-05 FIN EST S INT DK CH Atelier's Drosselbart järel, kes tuli ka tõu parimaks. Veel oli mulle uudiseks, et tõu parimaks tulnud koeral on Lätis kohustuslik jääda rühmavõistlusele, muidu võidakse tiitel tühistada.

Cesises sai juuniorklassis hinde suurepärane/2 meie hea sõber ja igipõline rivaal White Coastal Frankie, kuid see oli kõigest 'soojendus'. Frankie osales järgmisel päeval, 15. oktoobril, ka Leedus Shiauliai rahvuslikul koertenäitusel ning tuli seal tõu parimaks juunioriks. Porthos Shiauliai näitusel ei osalenud - seda enam hoidsime Frankiele pöialt:) Nii et nädalavahetuse mõlema Baltikumi koertenäituse bernide juuniorklassi võidud tulid Eestisse!

14 October 2006 was a super day again - in Cesis, Latvia, a latvian judge, mrs. Inese Pablaka gave Porthos excellent/1, junCAC and promotion prize. The judge said good words about Porthos'es teeth, coat, head, and character. From the ring secretary I learned - to my surprise -  that there is no such competition as best of breed junior in Latvia - only best of sex, who is chosen amongst the winners of each class. In the end, best of sex bitch and dog will compete to the best of breed title (I was surprised because the show rules in Estonia are different, we do compete for junior best of breed as well). In best male dog competition Porthos achieved the second place, after the champion class winner, FIN JW-03 FIN W-04 EST W-05 FIN EST S INT DK CH Atelier's Drosselbart from Finland. I also noticed that in Latvia, it is mandatory for a BOB winner to compete at the group competition, otherwise the title can be cancelled.

02 september 2006 osalesime rahvuslikul näitusel Padisel. Kohtunik oli šeltiekasvataja Helge Lie Norrast. Hinne 'suurepärane/3'. Samas tegi tuju heaks sõbra võit - palju õnne pr. Evele Tammele ja White Coastal Frankie'le TPJ ja TP võidu puhul! Kusjuures tõu parima valimisel osalesid ema Bernestfil Montana (VSP) ja tema poeg Frankie, nii et väga ilus bernipere :) Frankie tähelend jätkus ka rühmavõistlusel, kus ta saavutas neljanda koha.

Lõpus kätt surudes mainis kohtunik, et suurepärane koer, aga teilegi sama jutt, mis eelmisele - saba liiga kõrgel. Kusjuures - saba oli joostes püsti kõigil bernikatel (v.a. üks soome emane, kes tõesti ainsana jooksis, saba kandade vahel, ent ta oli ka päris halvas meeleolus). Berni standardis on öeldud, et saba on liikumise ajal selja kõrgusel või veidi kõrgemal, s.t. ei tohi rõngas seljale laskuda. Samas - kui nagunii enamusel on saba ringis liikudes seljajoonest kõrgemal, miks siis tuuleveskitega võidelda? Eriti, kui on näha, et see on bernide normaalne liikumisviis? Mnjah, minu arusaamist mööda on vähemalt bernikate puhul saba kõrgus meeleolu indikaator. Porthos võib vabalt, saba sirgus taga, ükskõikselt ringi sörkida - pole probleemi. Ent kui tal on tuju hea ja meel elevil, siis on saba viimane kolmandik ikka seljajoonest ülalpool. Olen näitustel ringi jalutades küllaga näinud händlereid, kes kõrvalises kohas ringieelset 'soojendust' tehes koeraga jooksevad ja käterätikuga igal sammul talle saba pihta äsavad, "saba alla" käratades, kuid olen neid seni ausalt öeldes pisut ülepingutatuks pidanud. Tõenäoliselt pean ka edaspidi, aga nüüd vähemalt tean, mis neid selleks sunnib ja ei vaata enam viltu. Kui enne arvasin, et näe, võidu nimel kõigeks valmis, siis nüüd saan aru, et lihtsalt elu on selline ja kes tahab rohkem kohtunikule meeldida, see teeb ka selle nimel suuremat tööd. :) Kuigi, tõenäoliselt ma olen rumal, aga ma ei saa aru, kuidas mõjutab saba kõrgus näituseringis jooksmise ajal (mis on ju treenitav, nagu näha) koera välimust või aretussesobivust? Igatahes Porthost võib ringis ka edaspidi just sellise saba asendiga jooksmas näha, nagu ta ise valib - kui see on tema loomulik liikumisviis ja hea tuju näitaja, siis ma ei näe mingit põhjust teda nurga taga käterätiga tagudes segadusse ajama hakata. Pigem jalutan temaga pool tundi enne ringi kaugemal ringi, andes talle võimaluse oma aur ja energia välja lasta. Eelnevalt natuke ära väsitatud koera saba asend on ringis alati perfektne ;)

02 September 2006 we went to Padise national show. The judge was a Shetland sheepdog breeder, mr. Helge Lie from Norway. He gave us 'excellent/3'. It was a pity not to get the third homeland junCAC. On the other hand - our friend's victory made us very glad - White Coastal Frankie was junBOB & BOB! This time there were mother Bernestfil Montana and her son Frankie competing in BOB ring, what a beautiful bernese family :) Congratulations to Frankie's owner, mrs. Eve Tamm! Frankie was also starring in the group competition, where he won BOG/4. A great day! :)

During handshaking the judge said that your dog is excellent but, as well as the previous dog, held his tail too high when moving. Actually - all of the Berners had their tailtips high (except for a finnish bitch, who was clearly in a bad mood). Bernese Mountain Dog standard says that the tail is on the backline or somewhat higher, when moving. However, how high is 'somewhat higher'? As far as I know, many many berners hold their tails at certain level, which is definitely higher than the backline. This being the case, why fight with windmills then? Especially, when it seems to be a normal thing for a berner? The Berners that I know show their emotions and mood via their tails - the higher, the happier (or more agitated). At times, Porthos also runs around with his tail between his legs but usually it means that the dog is tired or couldn't care less about what is going on. However, if he is happy and excited, his tail is upwards looking. I have seen plenty of handlers who train their dogs by knocking their tails with towels during running and bellowing 'tail down!' to them. To be honest, it has seemed too eager to me. I will consider it too eager in the future as well, only that now I realize, WHY they do this. C'est la vie - the more you want the judge to like your dog, the more work you do. I'm probably being just silly and don't get the whole picture but I don't understand, how does the tail position (which obviously can be trained) influence the dog's exterior or suitability to use her/him in the breeding? Anyway, in the future, Porthos will run in the show ring with his tail carried the way he pleases - if this is his natural way of moving and the sign of a good, happy mood, I see no reason why to confuse him by rapping his tail with the towel :)

26 augustil 2006 tegi Porthos mulle toreda sünnipäevakingituse, võites Vilniuse rahvuslikul näitusel kuumas ilmas ja veel kuumemas konkurentsis tõu parima juuniori (JN + Leedu juuniorsert) ning tõu parima tiitli. Kohtunikuks oli Poolast pärit dr. Tomasz Borkowski. Tõu parimaks tulemist ei julgenud üldse lootagi, sest olime ringis rinda pistmas ühe väga ilusa Venemaalt pärit emasega, ent tundub, et (sünni)koduseinad toetasid meid. Õhtusele rühmavõistlusele ei jäänud, kuna seljataga oli magamata öö ja ees ootas pikk kojusõit. Ligi 1000 kilomeetri pikkune näitusereis Leetu ja tagasi oli üsna väsitav ja seda suuremat rõõmu teeb esimesel katsel saadud juuniorsert :)

On August 26 2006, I got a nice birthday present from Porthos. He was Best of Breed (also best of breed junior = JN) at Vilnius National dog show in Lithuania. The judge was dr. Tomasz Borkowski from Poland. I didn't even dare to hope to win the BOB ring, since we were competing with a beautiful bitch from Russia. However, it looks like we had the advantage of home stadium :) I decided not to wait until the Best in Group competition in the evening, since I hadn't had a good night's sleep last night and there was a long way home waiting ahead. In total, we drove almost 1000 kilometres to the show and back. It was a tiresome trip and I am very glad that our effort was rewarded by the LTU junCAC :)

19 augustil 2006 osalesime Tallinna Rahvusvahelisel koertenäitusel "Võitja 2006". Vaatamata troopiliselt kuumast ilmast tüdinud olekule sai Porthos juuniorklassis väärtusliku teise koha ja hinde 'suurepärane'. Saksa kohtunik, pr. Hassi Assenmacher-Feyel, oli väga vaimustuses Satu Ylä-Mononeni poolt näidatud koertest, kes võitsid kõik klassid, milles nad osalesid, ehk siis kõik neli Võitjatiitlit. Palju õnne Satule jackpoti puhul!

On August 19-th 2006, there was an International dog show "Winner 2006" in Tallinn. Inspite of his tired look, caused by the tropical weather conditions, Porthos gained the second place in male juniors' class and was graded 'excellent'. A judge from Germany, mrs. Hassi Assenmacher-Feyel, was very impressed by the dogs, handled by Satu Ylä-Mononen, whose berners won all classes, where they participated in. Four 'Winner' titles to get - and all four titles went to Satu's dogs. Congratulations to Finland for the Jackpot!

12 augustil 2006 sõitsime Lätti, Jelgava külje all Ozolniekis toimunud rahvusvahelisele koertenäitusele. Et kui näitusepisik juba küljes, siis käime ja naudime ning avardame silmaringi, kuniks tiitlid käes ja esimene vaimustus üle läheb :) Iiri kohtunik Seamus Oates oli äärmiselt soliidne ja meeldiv, hindas ja kommenteeris väga põhjalikult ja sõbralikult. Porthosel läks kõvas konkurentsis väga hästi - hinne 'suurepärane'. Juuniorserdi sai läti koer Milbu Timothy; Porthos jäi kohtuniku sõnul alla seetõttu, et võiks mõne kilo juurde võtta. Ja mina tõsimeeli arvasin, et koer on suurepärases sportlikus vormis - hehee, võta näpust! Kaalusime siis kodus ära - võrreldes mai lõpu 54 kiloga oli praeguseks alles jäänud ainult 46,5 kg! Mnjah, lahjavõitu tõepoolest... :D Tegelikult on meil ka järgmisel nädalavahetusel näitus plaanis ning paraku koer nädala ajaga kogukamaks ei lähe. Nii et lähme "Võitjale" oma peenikese koeraga lihtsalt osalema, õppima ja kogemusi juurde saama.

Seekord püüdsin koerte esitlemist tähelepanelikult jälgida ja panin tähele, et võitis see koer, kellel oli omanikuga parim kontakt. Koer (lisaks sellele, et ta oli väga hea liikumise ja väljanägemisega) jooksis händleri kõrval talle pidevalt silma vaadates ja lõdva rihmaga. Ka mina oleks kohtunikuna sellist koostööd parima kohaga hinnanud :) Kahju, et näitustemaailmas alles nii uus olen, kindlasti on veel tuhat asja, millele tähelepanu pöörata, et oma koera võimalikult atraktiivsest küljest näidata.

Meie Läti-reisi parim osa polnud aga mitte näitus ise, vaid tagasiteel suvalisel metsavahel tehtud puhkepaus. Enda teadmata olime platsi sisse võtnud keset sookõrgendikku (pealtnäha mets nagu mets ikka) ja see, mis eemalt paistis mõnusa väikese tiigikesena, oli tegelikult pehmekaldaline rabalaugas. Porthos kihutas sinna pahaaimamatult janu kustutama ja vajus mulksti kõrvuni sisse. Enam välja ei saa! Ja meie ligi ka ei saa. Näitusekostüümis põlvili roomates sain muda seest merehädalise lõpuks kaelarihmapidi kätte ja ühe käega rihmast, teisega tagumikukarvadest tirides jõudis peen porine koerahärra lõpuks ka kindlale maale. Phuh, sellel on omad eelised, et ta nii vähe kaalub. Kuna vetruval pinnasel püsti tõusmine ei käinud mul just välgukiirusel, siis jõudis koer ennast energiliselt veest, mudast ja turbast kuivemaks raputada, otse mulle näkku. Millised me peale seda väikest ekstravagantsust välja nägime, ei tahaks detailsemalt kirjeldada. Ütlen vaid, et meie autojuht mugistas pärast seda veel pool päeva naerda; eriti lõbus oli tal siis, kui pidin jääkülma Riia lahte ennast ja koera küürima minema. Jääb ainult lisada, et ootan juba igatsusega järgmist Läti-sõitu, äkki on veel põnevam :)

On 12-th august 2006 we took a trip to Latvia, to Ozolnieki (near Jelgava) International Dog Show. Since we've caught the dog-show-bug, we had decided to travel around, enjoy, and widen our horizon, as long as there were titles to pursue and first excitement would pass :) An Irish judge, Seamus Oates, was extremely steady and pleasant, commented on the dogs very thoroughly and friendly. Porthos did very well in the keen competition and was graded 'excellent'. However, the junior CAC stayed in Latvia and went to Milbu Timothy. In addition to the fact that Timothy was very goodlooking and moved well, I noticed that he had an excellent eye-contact with his handler throughout all the judging time. If I were the judge, I would have prized such a fine co-operation with the first position as well, no doubt about it :) Too bad that I'm still such a novice in the world of dog shows; I'm sure that there are thousands of little nuances to consider and pay attention to when trying to show your dog in the most attractive way.

However, the best part of our trip to Latvia was not the show itself. On our way back, we decided to make a little break from driving and found a nice spot somewhere in the middle of forest, not too far from the main road. What we didn't know was the fact that we were camping in the middle of a swamp. What looked like a nice pond from distance, was actually a bog-pool with sinking shores. Porthos went there for a quick drink and fell straight in, up to his ears. Can't struggle out! And we couldn't approach him either. All dressed up in my dog-show suit, I crawled nearer and got a hold of him. Dragging from his collar with one hand and from his rump hair with the other, I finally tugged mr. Smooth Doggy Dog onto the firm land. As I wasn't too quick on getting myself up on the bouncy surface, I got a nice shower of water, mud and turf all over me, as my favourite four-legged castaway decided to shake himself dry. How did we look like after that petty extravagancy, I shall not describe in further detail. I only mention that our driver was giggling for the rest of the day. And as if this wasn't enough, I had to march into the ice-cold gulf of Riga, to tidy up both the dog and myself. May I add that I'm already looking forward to our next trip to Latvia because hopefully it will turn out to be an even more exciting experience! :D

05 augustil 2006 läksime Väimela Rahvuslikule koertenäitusele juuniortšempionitiitliks vajalikku kolmandat juuniorserti püüdma, aga seekord ei õnnestunud. Kohtunikuks oli pr. Maret Kärdi, kes oli hindamisel päris karm. Ükski isane bernikas ei olnud tema meelest suurepärast hinnet väärt, nii et isaste hulgast keegi serti ei saanudki. Saime hindeks väga hea ja teise koha. Kirjeldust üle andes lisas kohtunik sõnad, mis kõlasid umbes nii: "Tegelikult oli teie koeral kõik palju rohkem paigas, kui esimesel, aga laudjas pole ikka päris see..." Khm-khm, kui ikka KÕIK on palju rohkem paigas, siis sellise kommentaari saatel pole just teab mis meeldiv teiseks jääda. Tekib küsimus, mida siis omavahel võrreldi, kas koeri kui tervikuid või ainult tagumikke... Kui see oleks olnud meie esimene näitus, siis tõenäoliselt oleks see ka viimaseks jäänud, sest positiivseid emotsioone sealt ei tulnud. Isastega pidime ringis jooksma viis... kuus... seitse tiiru, samal ajal kui kohtunik harjutuskohtunikele tõustandardit selgitas ning jooksjatele eriti pilkugi ei heitnud. Ühele koerale mainis kohtunik, et "oleks nina veel lühem, siis oleks tegu juba broileriga..." Ei pea vist mainimagi, et seda koera edaspidi enam näituseringis näha pole olnud. Päris huvitav "eksperthinnang" berni karjakoera kohta. Emaste hindamisel jätkas ta sama kriitilises vaimus. Näiteks koer, kes oli nädal tagasi samalt kohtunikult Lätis näitusel 'suurepärase' saanud, hinnati Väimelas kõigest 'heaks'. Kuidas küll üks koer nädala ajaga ühe ja sama inimese silmis niipalju halveneda saab, jäigi mulle arusaamatuks. Ent kui osalejate ja ringi ümber kaasaelajate näod juba väga pikaks olid vajunud, sai viimane hinnatav emane siiski suurepärase hinde kätte. Jess, päev oli päästetud ja pettumus kohtuniku suhtes poole väiksem! Palju õnne Heli Jürindile ja Margarita Nigra Breenale - just see üks sert oli neil veel Balti juuniortšempioni tiitlist puudu. Super tulemus suurepärasele koerale!

On August 05, 2006 we went to Väimela National Dog Show to pursue our third and final JunCAC, necessary for getting the Estonian Junior Champion title. However, no luck this time. The judge was mrs. Maret Kärdi from Estonia, who was pretty rigid. None of the male berners got the 'excellent', neither did any male receive the CAC. We got 'very good' and second place. Handing us over the description, the judge gave us a weird statement, which sounded like that: "Actually everything was more correct in your dog, when compared to the 1-st place, but since the rump isn't what it ought to be..." Well-well, when EVERYTHING is MORE correct, then it doesn't feel very well to become the second best. It makes me wonder, what did the judge compare - the dogs as a whole or just the rumps? If it were our first show, I probably wouldn't be attending any other dog shows in the future, since the emotions that we got from Väimela were not so positive. She was very critical assessing the females as well. For instance, a bitch, who had received 'excellent' a week ago from the same judge in a Latvian CAC show, was given only 'good'. How can a dog deteriorate so drastically within a week in the eyes of a judge, I couldn't quite understand. However, when all the participants and bystanders were growing gradually more and more sulky, the last bitch finally received an 'excellent'. Yesss, the dog saved my day and the disappointment towards the judge was also reduced! Congratulations to Heli Jürindi and Margarita Nigra Breena - they needed 1 JunCAC to complete the Baltic Junior Champion title requirements, and here it came :)

29 juulil 2006 käisime teist korda näitusel. Räpinas toimunud rahvuslikul koertenäitusel hindas berni karjakoeri sloveenia kohtunik hr. Rajko Rotner, kes on muude ametite hulgas ka Sloveenia berni alpi karjakoerte aretuskomisjoni president. Porthost nähes tõstis kohtunik pöidla püsti, andis hindeks 'suurepärane/1' ning valis ta tõu parimaks juunioriks (saime oma teise jun serdi) ning ka tõu parimaks koeraks.

On July 29, 2006 was the second dog show for us. At National Dog Show in Räpina Bernese Mountain Dogs were rated by the slovenian judge mr. Rajko Rotner, who is, among other posts, the President of the Stud Commission for Berner Sennenhund in Slovenia. When he saw Porthos, he raised his thumb up and graded  him 'excellent/1' and Best of Breed junior (receiving also our second jun CAC). In the end, he was chosen Best of Breed as well.

Elu esimesel näitusel käidud, seistud, joostud ja hambaid näidatud:) 28 mail 2006 toimus Tallinna Lauluväljakul Šveitsi Alpi Karjakoerte tõuühingu poolt korraldatud Berni Alpi Karjakoerte I erinäitus; kohtunikuks oli Soome tuntud bernikasvataja pr. Satu Ylä-Mononen. Näitusel osales 55 bernikat, neist 18 juuniorklassis. Porthos sai hindeks 'suurepärane/1', tõu parima juuniori (TPJ) tiitli ning juuniorsertifikaadi.

We attended our first dog show on May 28, 2006. It took place on Tallinna Lauluväljak and was organized by Swiss Alpine Mountain and Cattle Dog Association of Estonia. It was a specialty show for the Bernese Mountain Dogs; the judge was a renowned berner breeder, mrs. Satu Ylä-Mononen from Finland. There were 55 berners participating; 18 of them in junior class. Porthos was graded 'excellent/1', chosen the Best of Breed Junior and received jun CAC. A special thanks to mrs. Heli Jürindi for her tips and advice to help preparing for the first show for both Porthos and me as a handler :)
